Structural steel
Steel is the material most frequently used in construction and in the production processes of machinery, equipment, cars, and everyday items. It is an alloy of iron with the addition of carbon, the proportions of which determine the physical properties of the product. There are many varieties of steel, classified based on different criteria. One of them is structural steel.
Types of structural steel
The factor that distinguishes different types of steel is its composition. The general definition states that it is an alloy of iron and carbon, with the carbon content not exceeding 2.11%. This is due to the enrichment of the alloy mixture with additional elements that change the properties of the product – e.g., increasing the strength or ductility of steel.
What place in the classification does it occupy? structural steelThis is one of four categories – alongside tool steel, machine steel, and special steel – into which material is divided considering its application. It is used for the construction of various building structures, as well as machines and their parts or vehicles.
According to the classification, the following are produced and used types of structural steel:
- general purpose,
- low-profile,
- higher quality,
- for thermal improvements,
- for carburising,
- to nitriding,
- Automatic,
- bearing,
- spring-loaded,
- transformer.
Structural steel designations
Individual Structural steel grades They differ in composition and properties. In practice, medium-carbon alloy steel is most commonly used, with a carbon content of at least 0.25%. However, as the various applications of structural steel require its parameters and physical properties to be tailored to specific needs, it is essential to precisely distinguish and designate these grades.
Currently, two standards apply to the production and marking of structural steel.
- according to PN-EN 10027-1:2007, it is a designation system, composed of symbols and numbers,
- According to PN-EN 10027-2:2015-07, it is an exclusively digital system.
Structural steel designations are structured so that a specific set of characters identifies only one type of material. In the case of the „old” Polish classification, individual symbols indicated characteristics such as: application, physical and mechanical properties, or chemical composition. The European system, used since 1992, consists of a combination of a single letter and a steel number. The standard designation for structural steel is the letter S.
What do the individual symbols mean?
The structural steel designations currently in use consist of the letter S and three digits. The numerical symbol indicates the so-called minimum yield strength Re, specified for a product with the minimum possible thickness of ≤ 16 mm. This value is expressed in MPa. Structural steels are designated by the symbols: 235, 275, 355, 420, 460, 500, 550, 620, 690, 890, 960.
In turn, the standard PN-EN 10027-2:1994 assigns each steel grade a specific five-digit number in the following format: l.xxnn. In this designation, 1 denotes a ferrous alloy, xx denotes the steel group, and nn denotes the specific grade within the group. The example designation 1.4301 is typical for the austenitic steel X10CrNi 18-8.
There are around 100 groups of steel, with characteristic properties and chemical composition. Alloy structural steels are designated by numbers xx in the range of 50 to 89.
