Types of structural stirrups
There are several types of construction stirrups. We mainly distinguish reinforcements for bar elements (columns, beams, arches), but also shell reinforcements and massive (solid) structures. The basic division of construction reinforcements includes two groups: load-bearing reinforcements and supplementary reinforcements.
These first ones are the basic type of reinforcement; they are designed with extreme precision and take into account all possible loads the structure will have to contend with in the future.
Additional reinforcement, on the other hand, strengthens the load-bearing reinforcement and cannot exist on its own. They are assembled in the formwork or reinforcement cage. Steel reinforcement is not required in every structure, as concrete is a durable material. Most often, we use reinforcement for balconies, columns, lintels, foundation strips and slabs, as well as ceilings and ceiling rings. These elements are exposed to tension and require support, which is provided by construction stirrups. Reinforcement stirrups is usually arranged perpendicular to the main reinforcement. The task of auxiliary building stirrups is to hold the main bars in the correct position in the formwork. Such reinforcement significantly simplifies the process of assembling frames. Reinforcement stirrups have a stabilising and structural function, and in the resulting structures, they transfer shear forces in beams and bursting forces in columns.
Construction stirrups – application and dimensions
Building stirrups find their application on many levels. They are reinforcements for foundations, slabs, walls, ring beams, stairs, columns, fences, etc. Numerous reinforcement stirrup dimensions determine the product's application. For example, 10x20 cm stirrups with a 6 mm diameter rib are excellent for use in ceiling joists above attics or in the core reinforcement of dwarf walls. A slightly larger size, 20x20 cm with a 6 mm diameter rib, can be used in columns and cores in load-bearing walls or above window lintels. For foundation beams, 25x25 cm stirrups with a 6 mm diameter rib or 30x25 cm stirrups with a 6 mm diameter rib will be best.
