Each grade of non-alloy structural steel can be intended for cold plastic working, in which case the letter C is placed at the end of the grade designation for such intended use.

A characteristic feature that distinguishes the species S355J2 steel, there is a yield limit. Its value is expressed by the ReH parameter [N/mm2] and means stress value, at which permanent changes in the material's structure occur. This means that after the force acting on the material is removed, it will return to its original form. For the steel described, the minimum yield strength is 355 MPa. The second important parameter of S355J2 steel is its tensile strength. It is expressed by the value Rm [N/mm2], and for the S355J2 steel grade, the minimum tensile strength is 470 MPa.
The limit value denotes the point at which permanent material damage occurs. The variation in upper strength limit is dependent on various impurities, which influence the physical properties of steel. Therefore, it can be stated that for every S355 steel, the yield strength is the same, while the tensile strength varies. In the case of steel grades S355J2+N or S355J2+M, the designation J2 indicates notch toughness (impact strength). This parameter indicates the threshold at which material fracture occurs under dynamic loads at a specific temperature.

S355J2+N (normalised) steel is particularly popular.
